Doug Luthanen

                   “Stains of Toil”

Doug joined Cargill in 1987 as Plant Manager of Sunny Fresh Foods in Monticello.  He also managed logistics for several Cargill business units.  He was a member of the Tartan Project when he retired in 2010.

Upon retirement he began working with the Ely Miners Memorial project of the Ely Arts and Heritage Center.  The Memorial seeks to honor and remember specifically the historic underground miners of Ely, MN but, by extension, recognize the contributions of other Miners everywhere.  The memorial is at the site of the Pioneer mine, a national historic site.

Doug’s father Matt worked as an underground iron miner from age 17 until Minnesota’s last underground iron mine closed in 1967. Five of his uncles were iron miners.  His grandfather was a blacksmith in the machine shop at Pioneer mine for 41 years.

Doug’s contribution to the memorial and to his family heritage includes composing and recording a music video called “Stains of Toil” performed by some excellent pop musicians.

The story of the video and its release can be read at the following link:

Congratulations, Doug on your video and the success of this project.
